The 2017 Utah Readers Luncheon – Recap

This Week’s Quote:
“The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.” – Ursula K. Le Guin

This past weekend it was my honor and privilege to share a table with authors Judy Baker and Mary Martinez at the 3rd Annual Utah Readers Luncheon. We had a blast visiting and giving away prizes. And the guest speakers, RaeAnne Thayne and Jill Shalvis were both delightful and inspiring.

Mark your calendar for October 13, 2018. We’d love to have you join us next year!

Guest Post with Judy Baker

Today I welcome Judy Baker to my blog! Judy Baker/Anna Sugg writes historical western romances and contemporary/suspense romance. Judy lives in the beautiful western state of Utah. Though she’s a southerner at heart, she loves the surrounding mountains and the desert valleys. jBaker

Tell us more about you and your writing, Judy.

Many have asked me what inspired my Yellow Creek Series. Well, it came from my grandmother. The first Yellow Creek Novel, Secret Past, came to life when several years ago, I visited my home town Clarksville, Tennessee. While there I decided to take a drive to Yellow Creek, which is a farming community a little over twenty miles from Clarksville. My grandparents had a farm in Yellow Creek, and I hadn’t visited the old deserted farm for over twenty years. I spent much of my youth running around the farm, chasing chickens, swinging on the front porch, listening to the summer rains pouring down on the tin roof, trekking through the woods, and skinny-dipping in the creek. As you can tell, I have many fond memories, which led to writing the first Yellow Creek novel, Secret Past. Please take a look at the video of Secret Past. You’ll see a picture of the old dilapidated farmhouse and the lady standing by the 1940 Ford is actually my mother.

Even though I was born and raised in the south, I’ve lived much of my life in the west. When I first met my husband, he was a horse riding cowboy in Nevada. Which contributes to my historical western romances. I had a blast creating my very own town from the very beginning. The Silver Sage Creek series is available on Amazon.

Back to my contemporary novels.  I’m excited to announce my third Yellow Creek Novel, Spirit Catcher, is now available. When Spirit Catcher was first released in April, 2015, it had a different book cover, now it’s been updated, which one do you like?

Spirit Catcher:  Unexplained visions. An old Cherokee Indian. A dog. And, human bones from the past.

Blurb:
When Charlotte Jane Matheson hangs the ancient Dream Catcher on the wall over her bed, she has weird dreams. Stirred by her dreams, she travels to the small community of Yellow Creek, Tennessee, determined to find out their meaning. While there, she meets an old Cherokee Indian, a dog that suddenly appears out of the dark woods, and a good-looking farmer-wannabe. Then, her dreams stop, but unexplained visions draw her into the past through a circle of light.

The phenomenal images of her mother, who’s been missing for over a decade, has to mean something when she’s led to a cave beyond the Cherokee burial grounds. Is the old Indian a true Cherokee, or a witch? Can he help her understand her visions and their meanings?

How is a missing employee connected to her property in Yellow Creek? And, why is the mysterious, farmer-wannabe always in the right place to help when she’s in need? What does he want from her? What does it all mean?

Excerpt:

“There’re mosquitoes out here.” She took a step, glanced toward the woods, and stopped dead in her tracks. A tiny light appeared. Her heart leaped forward, knowing it wasn’t a firefly or a flashlight…it…it…

She froze. Her eyes glued to the growing light as it seem to materialize out of the forest and glide into the field, toward her. The glowing light, widened with its smooth flowing advance, to the middle of the field. It stopped. A dark shadowed human shape floated into the center of the circle of light.

Charlie couldn’t calm her heart, pounding against her chest. The figure’s somewhat wavering face looked out at her, holding in one hand something that appeared to be a Dream Catcher, while the other hand motioned for her to come.

Charlie stepped forward, then she took another step, and another. She could hear Jacob barking, but she couldn’t take her eyes off the ghostly figure inside the glowing circle of light. The moment she reached out her hand, her breath caught in her throat, and in a blink, all went black.
