It’s that time of year again where everyone is decking their homes and their hearts with holiday cheer. I wish I could say I’m one of those who have my home ready for the holidays before Thanksgiving, but the truth is I dread digging out the decorations, rearranging the furniture, and finding places to put it all. I typically leave decorating until the week before Christmas.
However, once the process starts, the spirit takes over and I’m in full holiday mode. At our house we’re empty-nesters, so to accommodate our children who are grown with families of their own, we celebrate with everyone on Christmas Eve. It’s the one night of the year I insist be set aside for whole family to get together.
We have a family meal and last year, I started a tradition of showing videos of Christmas past—a countdown to the special event. I love seeing the progression of the kids and their kids through the years. Then it’s time, we all gather near the tree. Gifts from year to year can be different, but there are two things that are same. Stockings and cards.
We begin with stockings. The contents change from year to year here as well, but there’s always a toothbrush. We end with cards. One for each person. The cards are those funny, sometimes raunchy ones that give you a good laugh. The littlest kids get a kid-friendly card, but the adults are fair game!
The last thing I do before everyone heads to their homes and prepare for Santa to arrive, is read a story to the grandkids. It’s a special story called THE ANIMAL’S CHRISTMAS EVE. The book is an old Little Golden Book missing the front and back covers. The illustrations are still stunning and the little poem inside never fails to bring tears to my eyes. That is my cherished holiday tradition moment.
I wish you and yours a bright and joyous holiday season. May you find a tradition to celebrate through the years with your loved ones.
